Foot Pain? We Have Answers!

Flagstaff Foot Doctors | Foot Pain? We Have Answers! One of those conditions is Bunions.

Here are our answers to some common questionsโ‰๏ธโ‰๏ธโ€ฆ

A bunion is the term for the bone ๐Ÿฆด enlargement that protrudes out where your big toe ๐Ÿฆถand foot ๐Ÿ‘ฃ meet.

A bunion ๐Ÿฆด can also form on the outside of the foot ๐Ÿ‘ฃ where the little toe ๐Ÿฆถand foot meet.

Weโ€™d like to answer โ“a few of the most frequently asked questions โ“about bunions๐Ÿฆด, in case you or someone you know has been wondering.

1. Does wearing the wrong shoes ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘ž๐Ÿฅฟ๐Ÿ‘ cause a bunion๐Ÿฆดโ“

Bunions ๐Ÿฆดare almost always hereditary. Narrower shoes ๐Ÿ‘ก๐Ÿ‘ขworn consistently can make the bunion hurt ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜–more, but do not cause it. If shoes ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅฟwere the cause, men ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ and children ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป would never get bunions๐Ÿฆดโ€ฆ and they do. Unfortunately, some people ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿผ are just genetically predisposed to this condition.

2. Is there a splint that can correct a bunion๐Ÿฆดโ“

There are many splints on the market, but none of them correct a bunion๐Ÿฆด. Nothing will take away the enlarged bone ๐Ÿฆดand make the big toe ๐Ÿฆถstraight again other than surgery๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธ. Wearing a splint may slow down how fast a bunion ๐Ÿฆดgrows.

3. I heard a bunion ๐Ÿฆดalways comes back after being removed โ€“ is that true๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผ!

Although itโ€™s possible for a bunion ๐Ÿฆด to recur, when the right procedure is done itโ€™s rare the bunion ๐Ÿฆดwill return. The techniques for bunion ๐Ÿฆดcorrection keep getting better. Also, we recommend shoes ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ž๐Ÿฅพ with good support and custom orthotics to decrease the chance of a recurrence.

4. When is the best time to have the bunion ๐Ÿฆดremoved?

There are a couple of reasons to consider having surgery ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธ. The first is when there is pain ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ on a daily basis. The second is if the big toe ๐Ÿฆถstarts overlapping the second toe๐Ÿฆถ. The size of the bunion ๐Ÿฆดdoesnโ€™t always correlate with the pain๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ˜ฃ. Some large bunions ๐Ÿฆด rarely hurt ๐Ÿ˜”. Some small bunions ๐Ÿฆด hurt a ton. We can advise you as to if or when surgery ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ is indicated.

5. Will I need crutches ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿฆฝ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿฆฝ and a cast after surgery๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ?

Crutches, a walker ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿฆฏ or knee scooter ๐Ÿ›ด is necessary for almost every bunion ๐Ÿฆด surgery. Keeping pressure off the surgery site will decrease the pain ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ and swelling. A walking boot ๐Ÿฅพ is needed in most cases. A fiberglass cast is only needed for a rare form of bunion ๐Ÿฆดcorrection.

6. When is it safe to start exercising ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธafter surgery๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ?

The general rule is it takes about 2 months ๐Ÿ—“ to start walking ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ for exercise ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธor using an elliptical๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ. It usually takes longer to start jogging ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธagain. Some people can use an exercise bike ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธas early as 3 weeks after surgery.

7. What can be done about the pain ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜”besides surgery?

Sometimes weโ€™ll use cortisone to relieve the pain. Custom orthotics are helpful to align the foot better. Of course, wider shoes ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ๐Ÿฅพcan be helpful. Ice ๐ŸงŠ and Ibuprofen have also helped some people.

There isnโ€™t a one-size-fits-all for bunions๐Ÿฆด.

We recommend a non-surgical approach to bunions, like we do for all foot conditions, for as long as possible.

Some bunions ๐Ÿฆดcan get bigger and more painful ๐Ÿฅบquickly. An x-ray ๐ŸŽž will guide us to the best option if this occurs.

If you have had a bunion ๐Ÿฆดthat hurts โ˜น๏ธ๐Ÿ˜– fairly often, we can advise you on the best course of action.
